The mid-west of the USA is vast; travelling down some of the highways and having miles of open land either side is truly mind blowing. Seeing the Arches National Park, Canyonlands from a 4x4 and the Black Canyon, to name but a few, up close and personal, is just spectacular! Yes, there is a whole load of travelling by coach between each site, but it’s worth it.
But it’s not all scenery. For those who like steam locos, there’s the Durango to Silverton narrow gauge railway. The 4x4 tour of Canyonlands is epic! Not only do you see the spectacular scenery, there is the excitement of off-roading and the drivers are locals from the Moab area and full of interesting information. For those, like me, who love anything with an engine, there are trucks and rigs aplenty and classic gas guzzlers from the 50s and 60s abound the small towns. And then the wildlife. No, we didn’t see any bears (some of our group did, however), but we saw lots of bison, elk, loads of deer and all the usual small ground mammals and some really beautiful birds including raptors. So, something for everyone.
Our tour manager, Chris, was a mine of information. Chris’s historical knowledge of the locations and towns was really helpful and insightful. Chris ensured we got from A to B, with the least fuss and on time. Our driver, Wally, was a gem! He was a safe pair of hands at the wheel and a really nice guy to speak with and he told a few hair-raising stories of having driven through deep snow in the coach and having to “chain up” to continue progress.
So, would we recommend this tour? Yes, we would. We loved this well-balanced tour. Just a couple of small cautionary words - not all of the hotels are up market. One or two are motels. The main warning is that there is a lot of walking, sometimes on quite rough country, so you do need to be reasonably mobile and most especially, able to get on and off of a coach reasonably swiftly to allow the group to move freely.

Great National Parks of the Western USA
Just returned from a wonderful holiday to the national parks of usa. We visited 6 states all very different. Scenery was just fantastic, from mountains, canyons, cities, waterfalls, geysers. bubbling mud pools, parks, lakes and much more. Our courier was Janey and she was lovey, very informative. We had a coach full 47 people and that was too many as it took so long to get on and off the bus. Would advise anyone not to go as late as this in the year as we had temps from 31 deg to minus 6, it was very cold at times and the some of the passes were closed. Influnce very much on cowboy themes and it was great. Had lovely cowboy meals and lots of country western singing. Tour by Riveria was supurb, cant wait to try another long haul destination.
