"What a fantastic tour. Norman, our guide, was superb. Nothing was too much for him. Personal touches by him added enormous value to this already outstanding trip. We would most definitely use Riviera again. "

Venice paints a truly unique picture of beauty within Italy – a city which sits atop wooden pillars with enduring limestone foundations that allow its ornate buildings to rise out of the azure waters and bask in the golden sunlight.

Every few minutes you’ll find yourself stopping to admire yet another astonishing building or stunning view, which captures the romantic essence of Venice. Fingerprints of the old Venetian Empire can still be found throughout the city, linking back to the rich merchants and world-class artists who resided here, adding lavish touches to the architecture and artistic masterpieces that have been carefully preserved throughout the centuries.

Venice today, however, is so much more than art, monuments and buildings. It has a quieter side too; wander where your feet take you and lose yourself in the tangle of alleys within the delightful smaller parishes, discovering another Venice – that of the Venetians. Here you’ll find the traditional shops heaving with colourful fresh vegetables, children playing in the streets and the locals stopping to pass a few words in the street. The city still has a distinctly Italian atmosphere – from the bustle of St Mark’s Square, home to arguably the world’s most beautiful basilica, to the quieter areas where time has stood still, and you can take your time to enjoy an unhurried macchiato or ristretto.

Whether you’re exploring by foot or by vaporetto, soaking up as many sights as Venice has to offer will ensure even the most well-seasoned traveller is satisfied.

Your itinerary

The Grand Canal of Venice

Arrive at the airport to take your flight to Venice or Treviso. On arrival we transfer by coach to out hotel for four nights. 2019 departures stay at the four-star Hotel Principe, with breakfast. 2020 departures stay at the three-star superior Tritone Hotel, with breakfast.

Each afternoon of this tour is at leisure to allow you to explore as you wish. The options are endless – perhaps a trip in a gondola along the backwater canals or maybe a more up-tempo journey on the vaporetto (water bus) along the Grand Canal, which teems with vessels of all sorts.

Art-lovers can head for the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, situated close to each other and brimming with classic and modern masterpieces. The Scuola Grande di San Rocco and Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni are full of works by Tintoretto and Carpaccio respectively, plus other pieces by giants of the Renaissance.

The view from the top of St Mark’s Campanile, one of the great landmarks, is unmissable and perhaps the finest place for views of Venice in all its glory. In the evening you could enjoy one of the numerous classical music concerts taking place throughout the city.

St Mark's Square

We have a walking tour of the classic sights of Venice, with a local guide explaining the fascinating stories behind the iconic sights, including the Doge’s Palace, St Mark’s Square and Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs and a host of other architectural wonders.

Next, we have a timed entrance to St Mark’s Basilica. A true wonder of human achievement, there aren’t enough superlatives to do it justice. The floor is made of coloured 12th-century marble, while the walls and vaulted ceiling are covered with over 86,000 square feet of glittering mosaics, mostly from the 12th and 13th centuries. Another highlight is the Treasury, which contains the magnificent Pala d’Oro, a gem-studded golden altarpiece containing over 250 enamelled panels.

Finally, there’s the Doge’s Palace, traditional home of Venice’s most important citizen and effectively the city’s seat of government for over a thousand years. As well as exquisite wood carvings, this masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture contains works by Titian, Veronese and many other masters.

The afternoon is free to explore as you wish.
