This is an opportunity to experience the best of both countries in one tour, at a time of the year when the temperatures are favourable for visiting each destination.Getting to the other side of the world can be a long and tiring journey, so we have chosen to fly using the multi-award-winning Singapore Airlines, who also offer an excellent premium-economy service.

Our first stop is Cairns, the capital of the tropical north. Founded in 1876 to service the nearby goldfields, Cairns has evolved from a rough frontier outpost, where pubs nearly outnumbered people, to an international, cosmopolitan destination. Our stay here will include a scenic railway trip into the rainforest and a cruise to the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, where you’ll learn about the conservation work on the reef and have the opportunity to snorkel or view the coral and multi-coloured fish from a glass-bottomed boat.

From Cairns, we fly to Melbourne, Australia’s cultural capital. Our programme in the city includes visits to Federation Square and the 88th-floor Skydeck of the Eureka Tower for amazing views. We’ll head out to the nearby Phillip Island for its famous ‘penguin parade’.

From Melbourne we take the short flight to Sydney for three nights in this extraordinary city with a spectacular harbour setting. Our morning tour of the city will include the historic Rocks area, where a fleet landed in 1788 to establish Australia’s first British settlement. We also visit the Sydney Opera House, considered one of the greatest buildings of all time, and round off the day with a harbour dinner cruise. Our day out to the Blue Mountains includes an exploration of the rainforest by train and on the Scenic Cableway.

A three-hour flight across the Tasman Sea takes us to New Zealand, where we stay in Auckland for two nights. You’ll have plenty of time to explore the attractive waterfront area, and our included tour will visit the Auckland Domain Wintergardens and the Auckland Museum. We then travel to the subtropical Bay of Islands for two nights – a wonderful region of small historic towns, and a deeply indented coastline filled with golden sandy coves, a paradise for sailing and boating where you’re sure to enjoy our dolphin watching cruise.

Rotorua is one of North Island’s greatest areas of geothermal activity with spectacular geysers, steaming hot pools and bubbling mud. It’s also a centre of Māori settlement, and in the evening you’ll attend a Māori hangi (feast) featuring a pōwhiri welcome ceremony, as well as traditional songs and dances reliving the stories of Māori myths and legends, followed by a meal of lamb, chicken and sweet potato cooked in a traditional way in an underground oven.

We fly to Queenstown on South Island for three nights and enjoy some time at leisure in this scenic resort, known for its vast range of adventure activities. One of the highlights of South Island is Fjordland National Park and we’ll spend an amazing day out cruising along magnificent Milford Sound. Then we travel across Central Otago, through the Haast Pass to the West Coast – the scenery is simply stunning! We continue north through native forest to Franz Josef Glacier Village to view the huge rivers of ice, which flow from the vast snowfields of the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. The final journey of the holiday is by coach via Greymouth to Arthur’s Pass National Park, where we board the TranzAlpine train for a scenic rail crossing of the Southern Alps, through spectacular gorges and river valleys to the garden city of Christchurch, where our journey concludes.
