New Zealand is a country made for walkers – the wide-open spaces, cascading glaciers and spectacular mountain ranges form a natural paradise for all lovers of the great outdoors. Your tour of New Zealand will include most of the premier sightseeing attractions, combined with comfortable and leisurely walking in the magnificent national parks. Guided walks range from 3 to 6 miles (5 to 9.5 kilometres) with minimal ascent. On a few days there are also optional, more challenging walks of up to 10 miles (16 kilometres) and 2,550 feet (780 metres) of ascent.

Throughout the holiday you will be accompanied by a Riviera Travel tour manager and local guides, with the support of our New Zealand walking partners, who have more than 30 years’ experience in organising walking holidays in the country.

We fly with Singapore Airlines, renowned for their world-class service, via Singapore to Auckland and return from Christchurch.

Our first day in Auckland is at leisure to relax after the long flight. The following day we cruise to Rangitoto Island, the youngest volcano in the Hauraki Gulf. The leisurely walk to the summit reveals magnificent views of the city and the Waitakere Ranges.

Journeying south, we enjoy short walks to Wairere Falls and the Karangahake Gorge in the eastern Coromandel before arriving at Rotorua, New Zealand’s thermal springs region and site of the country’s best-known Māori settlements. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a Māori hangi (feast), featuring a pōwhiri (welcome ceremony) and traditional songs and dances relaying the stories of Māori myths and legends, followed by a meal of lamb, chicken, and ūmara (sweet potato) cooked in the traditional way in an underground oven. We’ll visit Te Puia, the Māori Arts and Crafts Centre, and the spectacular Waimangu Volcanic Valley, site of the original white and pink terraces, and enjoy a cruise on Lake Rotomahana.

A short coach drive takes us on to Tongariro National Park for two days of easy scenic walks and sightseeing. In this amazing region of volcanic peaks, our stay includes dinner at the exclusive Chateau Tongariro Hotel.

From Wellington we cruise across the Cook Strait to Picton and enjoy a visit to one of Blenheim’s boutique wineries en route to Nelson, the ‘Sunshine City’ of New Zealand. There’s time to stretch your legs on a section of the Centre of New Zealand, an iconic walk that follows the Maitai River.

Abel Tasman National Park is a paradise of golden coves and blue lagoons, sheltered by forested ranges, and our trip into the park aboard a small cruiser provides the opportunity to ‘tramp’ to beautiful Torrent Bay.

Our route is now along the West Coast through an area of semi-tropical bush, unusual rock formations, rugged coastlines and glaciers. Driving through the scenic Buller Gorge, we view the seal colony at Westport and the famous blowholes at Dolomite Point en route to Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. The best way to experience these amazing natural phenomena is from the air, so we have arranged for an included helicopter flight to see the magnificent Franz Josef Glacier.

From Fox, we travel past deserted beaches, vibrant rainforests and through tiny settlements to reach Wanaka in Mount Aspiring National Park. Here, in a beautiful setting of lakes and mountains, we offer the best half-day walk in New Zealand to Diamond Lake and Rocky Mountain. There are also options for short lakeside walks.

Two wonderful days are spent with leisurely walks around the picturesque area of Queenstown. Situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, it is described as ‘the Switzerland of the southern hemisphere’.

The small lakeside township of Te Anau is the gateway to the World Heritage Fiordland National Park and we walk a section of the awe-inspiring Kepler Track and visit one of the most beautiful locations in New Zealand, Milford Sound. A morning cruise on the Sound is followed by a short walk with an expert nature guide.

Heading north, we drive via Arrowtown to the Mount Cook Area for a choice of easy walks in the Hooker Valley, so we can see Aoraki (the Māori name for Mount Cook) at close quarters. Then we descend to the Canterbury Plains for our final journey to Christchurch, that most English of cities, for walks in the Botanic Gardens and to see the city sights.
