If you've just returned from a tour we'd love to hear from you.
Berlin, Dresden, Meissen & Colditz
This was the first time that we have travelled with Riviera. We chose this trip as I had family In East Germany and wanted to know more of the history of this region. We were not disappointed. Mike our guide was superb. His knowledge of Berlin and Dresden was second to none. The accommodation and food was the best we have ever experienced on holiday. The only downside was we could have easily spent another day in Berlin. We will certainly use Riviera again.

We have travelled several times before with Riviera and have always found the tours excellent. This tour to Berlin and Dresden was excellent.
The hotel were very comfortable and in very good central positions. The coach travels was very comfortable with excellent drivers. The tour was made even better by our excellent guide Frank. He was so informative and helpful and went out of his way to ensure that the large group was taken care of at all times.

Wonderful tour to Berlin and Dresden our guide Richard was very good and went out of his way to make sure everything ran smoothly. Hotels the best and breakfasts amazing Only one disappointment wished Colditz visit was longer I was really looking forward to seeing the glider.
But as a whole a brilliant tour.

My sister, niece and I have just returned from a most memorable trip to Dresden and Berlin and I would like to commend Riviera for it’s fantastic arrangements and quality accommodation throughout. A real highlight of the trip was our Guide, Mike, who made every journey, walk and meeting such an informative and personal experience. We learned so much and felt privileged to be part of a super group in fantastic cities, with Mike.
Thank you so much!

I am writing to say how much my friend and I enjoyed this most interesting trip. In particular, we would like to thank our guide, Keith, who was not only most generous in sharing his immense knowledge of the places visited and all things German, but who delivered his knowledge in such a memorably witty and often moving way.
This has so far been my third trip with Riviera, all of them a success, so please continue to send me your brochure!
Review by Althea Chapman on 11 October 2016
My wife and I have just returned from the above trip, and would like say how enjoyable the trip was. Frank( I do not know his surname) the courier was excellent , not only with all the historical information, which made the visits so much more interesting , but also with his courier duties which he performed above and beyond the call of duty.
He must be the jewel in the crown in your company.
Thank you .
As an observation may I suggest that another day in Berlin would make this tour perfect.

The holiday was superb with the correct amount of free time compared to the guided sightseeing. Our Guide, Frank was fantastic. Extremely knowledgeable, kind, courteous and very friendly to us all. We would recommend him as a guide any time.

Hi, just returned from our latest Riviera excursion, to Berlin and Dresden etc; and both my wife Carol, and I would like to say how much we appreciated, and enjoyed the holiday. Chris, the Tour guide, was excellent, as are all your guides in our experience. She was always available, very approachable, and helpful, with a good sense of humour. Her knowledge, and attention to detail was impressive. We are already looking to our next holiday with Riviera! Best wishes

This was my second Riviera holiday- I travelled to Vietnam and Cambodia earlier this year- but it was a first for my husband. The tour was excellent. We had a fantastic tour manager in Keith, whose knowledge of the places visited was outstanding and whose patience and humour were endless. I have booked another Riviera holiday next year- travelling to Peru - and my husband and I are already studying the brochure for another European holiday.

Our first Riviera holiday. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Richard, our tour manager, was excellent - good fun and clearly knew his job. The hotels were really good. The only down side was the awful Berlin airport.
Review by Mark & Moira Barnard on 2 October 2016
Another blockbuster from Riviera. Their tours are not for the faint-hearted. In five days from Belfast (only three for our Glasgow companions) we saw the sights of Berlin and Dresden, re-lived the Colditz story and marvelled at the craftsmanship and price of Meissen porcelain. We were expertly driven and Andy kept us bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with his unfailing cheerfulness, courtesy, assistance and information for our education and entertainment. I touched remnants of the Wall, walked through the Brandenburg Gate, strolled Unter den Linden and shared tracks with cyclists and joggers in the Tiergarten. At Colditz I had lunch in the IH hostel inside the castle. In the Saxon capital I cruised the Elbe and, sustained by sausages and beer, gazed at riverside castles and vineyards from on-board ship. I was welcomed at VW’s glassy factory and sat behind the wheel of a plush Phaeton. I felt the sun shining on Zwinger’s extensive garden and fountains and was benumbed by the volume of old masters in its galleries. Both hotels were very good. Berlin’s has a good pool and both offered sparkling wine on ice at breakfast. The worst part was rushing to catch the coach back to Tegel. Now I’m home again, looking at my brochures and photos, catching up on sleep and wondering, ‘Did it all really happen?’
Review by Gerry Bell on 27 September 2016
The tour exceeded all our expectations, was so well organised with the itinerary well researched. All aspects of the tour, hotels (exceptionally well chosen and situated) air & coach travel and at all times convenient stops for refreshment.
The best of all was the Tour Manager Frank who treated all guests in the most gracious manner, His history of all geographical areas covered, was given to us in just the right amount of depth, and so much added to the enjoyment. He even went to the trouble of taking all comers on a gastronomic tour when hitting both Dresden and Berlin. This added to the enjoyment as it obviated the need to search for acceptable eating places.
The first question to be asked when booking a further tour ‘is it being led by Frank’
Review by Mr & Mrs Alexander SCOTT on 26 September 2016
Highly recommended! We flew to Berlin from Birmingham and then had a two and a half hour transfer to Dresden, meaning that we arrived in time for our evening meal. The location of the Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe is brilliant, in the main square, next to the Cathedral. There are plenty of restaurants available locally, most reasonably priced. Rooms in the hotel are really good, we had one equipped for the less able, so it had a wet room for a bathroom. Comfortable beds and tea and coffee making equipment too! Breakfast was buffet, both hot and cold, no complaints there. Our tour manager Frank (who is brilliant by the way!) had met us at the hotel on arrival, and he took us on a 2 hour morning walking tour of the main sites of interest in Dresden. His knowledge of WW2, and Dresden`s part in it, made for enthralling listening, and to begin with quite emotional when we viewed a memorial in the Old Market place. In the afternoon we were free to do our own thing, and it was easy to revisit places with more time. Day 3, was an early start, visiting the Meissen factory, watching the production of the porcelain figures (interesting), and then to a disappointing Colditz. The POW castle looks more like a nice hotel, so it is hard to imagine the escapades of the prisoners, although our Yorkshireman guide Alex did his enthusiastic best to create the atmosphere. Because of the distance covered, it is a long day, so arrival in Berlin was also late. The Maritim Hotel is about 15 minutes walk from Potsdam Square, where the Sony Centre is the hub for loads of restaurants. Rooms in this hotel we thought were even better than Dresden, and there can be no complaints at all with the choice of hotels on this trip. Breakfast was a bit frantic the following day, as the hotel is huge, and at times the staff struggled to keep up. Frank took us on a coach ride for 3 hours around Berlin on day 4, enabling us to pick out places to revisit in the afternoon, and on the last day before airport departures. We left the hotel at 5.30 pm, so we had all of the last day to sight see. There is plenty to see, lots very thought provoking, even if you are not a history buff.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip. Frank is the best guide we have encountered, his depth of knowledge, and enthralling story telling second to none.

I would like to say thanks to Riviera Travel for a wonderful tour to Berlin and Dresden. It was a wonderful tour with a nice overview of both cities with the inclusion of Colditz Castle and Meissen Porcelain. Janay was a really nice tour guide. I enjoyed it very much. I would definitely use them again. This was my first time booking with them and you will here from me again.

An excellent short holiday, Alexander was an excellent, efficient, and humorous guide. Both Maritim Hotels provided first class accommodation and service and were in ideal locations, The itinerary was well chosen with enough spare time for further exploration.

I cannot praise the tour guide Alan enough he was very informative helpful and kind and a very nice chap.
The trip was very enjoyable, I wish though we had more time in Berlin, as it has so much to see and do. I went on a river cruise to France earlier in the year and that was fantastic. The staff were excellent. With that level of customer care, Riviera will be the one I will look at in the future.

I have just returned from another excellent Riviera tour, my 7th. This time to Berlin and Dresden.
The tour was well organised with a good balance of guided tours and free time; the hotels, first class.
Our tour manager, Mike, is probably the best I’ve been with. His knowledge of the area was excellent. He was interesting and humorous to listen too. Also very helpful and more than willing to make a suggestion or two for our free time; willing to go that extra mile. All in all a very fulfilling experience.
Many thanks and I look forward to booking me next trip with Riviera.

My Mother and I missed our flight to Berlin a few weeks ago to join your Dresden and Berlin tour. I stupidly left my passport at home !!!!It is my Mum’s 80th year and she has always wanted to go to Dresden so I was mortified by my mistake!!!
I rang the emergency number and an extremely kind, understanding and helpful lady called Caroline answered the phone. Caroline helped us book another flight for the following morning and arranged for us to be met at Berlin airport by another tour.
We were so grateful to her. It would have been a complicated and arduous journey, particularly for my Mother, to get from Berlin to Dresden. Meeting another tour to take us to our hotel was a Godsend!
Frank met us at our hotel and helped us make the most of our time left in Dresden. Frank continued to be a fantastic host with excellent knowledge of the area.
We will have no hesitation in considering your company for future holidays however, our next destination of choice is Bucharest and, unfortunately, isn’t somewhere you visit. Perhaps somewhere for your company to consider for the future?
I hope you will pass on our gratitude to Caroline and Frank and give them the recognition we believe they deserve.

We wish to say how pleased we were with our holiday to Berlin, Dresden, Meissen and Colditz from 16th to 20th May . Our tour guide. Frank, was very helpful and informative at all times. The hotels were splendid, especially in Dresden. Our one criticism -we would have liked more time in Berlin- one day was simply not enough in this city. Many thanks for our great holiday.

Review by Angela Ayling on 21 May 2016
Found this tour very interesting but some of the starts irritatingly early. Would love to have seen more of Colditz Castle and perhaps a little less of the Meissen factory. Hotels were very good and our tour guide Janie very helpful informative and patient, she made some of the more boring parts of the tour bearable. I would certainly use Riviera again.
Review by Mr Barry Gatward on 21 May 2016
An excellent tour. Hotels superb with extensive choice for breakfast. We learned a lot from Frank our tour manager who is passionate about his subject and shares it in an interesting way. He was well organised showing us places to eat just after our arrival in places.
Colditz was not to be missed. Fascinating to actually be there and see what we’d only seen on films before. In my opinion the Meissen factory could be missed.
Both our walking tour of Dresden and the bus tour of Berlin were informative and interesting.
This was our second trip with Riviera and it fulfilled all our expectations.

A friend and I have recently returned from the above trip which we enjoyed very much. The whole trip was enhanced by our Tour Manager, Frank Pattison. His organisation together with his knowledge and enthusiasm for Germany and all things German was amazing and added considerably to our enjoyment (and knowledge).
This is the second holiday we have taken with Riviera over the last six months and I have to say that on both occasions the calibre of the Tour Manager (and in S Africa the local guide too) has been the best we have ever encountered. Well done!

We returned last week from a most enjoyable “Dresden, Meissen, Colditz and Berlin” Break, and sincerely thank your Tour Manager, Frank Pattison, for his excellent lead. His most interesting and informative commentaries were both polished and professional, adding quality to one of the most interesting European Breaks we have experienced.

Just returned from a tour of Dresden and Berlin 9th to the 13th May. As always an excellent trip with Riviera and a very knowledgeable tour guide in Andrew. When a demonstration meant that we couldn’t visit one of the scheduled attractions, Andrew proved to be just as informed on the alternatives. Hotels were good and ideally situated whether you wanted to walk or use public transport.

We have just completed our trip of Dresden Meissen Colditz and Berlin with Alan Jones as our Tour manager and guide. We very much enjoyed the trip and would like to compliment Alan in particular. He was helpful and knowledgeable with a pleasant light touch to the way he explained and organised the tour. We cannot remember a better guide on trips we have had before. We would be interested to learn of future trips that Alan is leading.

My husband and I have just returned from an excellent short tour (11th to 15th April) of Berlin, Colditz, Dresden, Meissen with Tour Manager Frank Pattison.
We have nothing but praise for him as manager, guide, educator. He was friendly, helpful and professional at all times, with a good sense of humour, and he set us at ease from the very start. His knowledge was impressive and not only did we learn so much about the history of the places we visited, but he gave us personal insights and experiences too, which made the history more real, more interesting and more memorable.
The hand-outs that he had prepared, with maps, daily itinerary and local information, were very useful and informative and the suggestions and choices that he gave, allowed us to make the most of our ‘free’ time.
We both felt that we were in totally safe hands for the 5 days and so we were able to relax and enjoy visiting new places and learning new things, which ultimately was our aim.
Having had a poor experience with Tour Managers on a Danube Cruise a few years ago, Frank has restored our faith and we just wish he did more Tours! Please thank him on our behalf.
Review by Judith Lincoln & Richard McCullagh on 9 May 2016
This was our first trip with Riviera and we had the most wonderful time, much of it down to our Tour Manager Mike who did everything he could to make sure all our group enjoyed themselves and were happy, informed and safe. Mike’s knowledge of the places we visited was evident in the detailed and informative commentaries which everyone appreciated. The Tour was a good mix of ‘guided tour’ and free time and the hotels in Dresden and Berlin were outstanding ( just have to mention the amazing buffet breakfasts, what a choice!) We had a truly wonderful time and were sad when the time came to leave and to our delight Mike even accompanied us to the airport to make sure we all got on our flight safely. We don’t think we could have asked for more and we will certainly travel again with Riviera, thank you from two happy travellers.

This trip was excellent. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide in Frank Pattison, who was stunningly enthusiastic and informative on each place we visited. When arriving at each hotel, he took us on a short guided walk, telling us of the best restaurants to go to and places of interest to visit. Frank Pattison made sure we had a brilliant holiday.

Well planned and organised, two contrasting cities and two small towns. Knowledgeable and approachable guide, first-class. Excellent hotels. Ideal for anyone visiting Germany for the first time, or indeed for those who already know the country, as there is total freedom to wander independently or to take advantage of the guided tours.
Review by Judith Beck on 19 April 2013
This was our first tour with Riviera Travel and it exceeded all our expectations. Our tour guide Frank was excellent and must be one of your best tour guides if not the best. His knowledge of German history both old and new was very impressive. We now know a lot more about German culture, history and most importantly where the good restaurants are. Hotels and coach travel was excellent. We will certainly travel with you again.

Once again a thoroughly enjoyable Riviera trip which was enhanced by the tour manager Frank. The balance of tours against free time was ideal and the hotels were excellent, good quality and centrally located.
Review by Gill Brown on 20 April 2013
Really enjoyed the trip. As our flight was a late one from Liverpool did not have as much time in Berlin but our guide was very informative. Loved Colditz Castle but my favourite was Dresden. Fabulous Hotel the Steigenberger with the added coffee and tea making facilities and the location in the new market square was a bonus. All the sights and restaurants were within walking distance. Super holiday and fantastic holiday guide Janey, she’s a gem.
Review by Pauline Henthorn on 22 April 2013
This was our first tour with Riviera and we were very impressed with everything: we stayed at the Maritim hotels in Berlin and Dresden. Both of these were of a very high standard, especially Berlin (very clean, good size, pleasing new decor with lovely comfy beds) and we would recommend both. Our only disappointment was that we only discovered on the last night that we should have eaten at the hotel in the evenings as well as for breakfast, instead of taking our chances elsewhere. The evening buffet was really good and the breakfast buffet was one of the most varied we have known! Our guide Roy, was superb too…dry sense of humour and doing everything at the right pace to make the trips enjoyable without us feeling ‘herded’. Will definitely travel with Riviera again. Thank you!
Review by Heather & Chris Pelling on 1 May 2013
Our second tour with you and once again excellent hotels in both Dresden and Berlin. Frank our guide achieved a wonderful balance of sharing his extensive knowledge and experiences of Germany without seeming to lecture us. A very entertaining guide at Colditz with a wonderful sense of humour. Fabulous weather too! Well done Riviera.
Review by Cynthia Wakelin on 6 May 2013
This was the first tour my wife and I had taken with Riviera. The hotels in Berlin and Dresden were first class in every way, probably amongst the best we have ever stayed in, with large comfortable rooms, excellent service and high quality self service breakfasts. This was our first trip to Germany, so the information supplied by the tour guide was very useful. Although fairly short, this tour gives a good insight into life in Berlin and the tours of Colditz castle and the Meissen ceramic factory on the way to Dresden were very well done by local professional guides. Recommended.

Having just returned from the Berlin, Colditz, Meissen and Dresden we should like to express how much we enjoyed the trip! Super hotels, good buses and drivers, splendid guide - Mary - and everything worked as it should. The heat was a little overpowering but we cannot blame you for that. Rather it be that way than pouring with rain
Review by Ken and Jennifer Rogers on 26 June 2013
This was my first trip with Riviera and my first group holiday in many years as I usually travel independently; it certainly will not be my last. The organisation was excellent and the tour manager very efficient and knowledgeable. The weather on a couple of the days was extremely hot and humid and President Obama’s visit resulted in many detours and waits for public transport - none of which was the fault of Riviera. The Maritim hotels were very good and just right for the type of tour I thought. I cannot criticise any aspect of the trip as organised and certainly would recommend it to others. It is also good to have flights out of Scotland.
Review by Catherine Lockhart on 27 June 2013
We don’t usually do organised tours but what a surprise. Plenty of time to ourselves and tours that were informative and gave us plenty info about what to take a longer look at. Mary - our tour manager was excellent, so calm and efficient. The hotels were well above expectations and the whole trip went like clock work. Seriously considering another trip next year.

My wife and I have just returned from the Berlin-Dresden holiday. The holiday was superb. Unfortunately my wife caught an eye infection and we spent Sunday afternoon in the hospital. However we did not miss any of the activities and made the best of the situation. I would like to give the utmost praise to our tour manager, Keith. He was on hand for advice with the medical problem, and full of historical information. We have been with Riviera quite a few times and all tour managers have been excellent, but Keith went the extra mile. Thank you for another excellent trip.
Review by Peter and Carol Locke on 30 July 2013
An excellent trip greatly enhanced by the Tour Manager Keith, who as previosuly stated goes the extra mile to help and support everyone. My father-in-Law also travelled with us and on the day in Berlin, Keith helped us to find the Berlin War Cemetry, above and beyond expectations. In terms of the trip itself, we did Dresden first, it was very relaxing and we would encourage people to vist this outstanding city. Both hotels on the trip were fantastic - Hotel Steinberger in Dresden and the Maritim in Berlin. This is our second trip with Riviera and we have found both of them to be really good value. We will certainly be booking again next year. Thank you. David Bell

My husband and I have just returned from Germany after a most interesting and thought-provoking tour. The organisation of the entire tour was of the highest order and our hotels (Maritim) matched up to the quality we have come to expect of Riviera. A good balance was also struck between free time and guided content. Unquestionably our experience was enhanced by our delightful Tour Manager, Frank, whose encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of Berlin before and after reunification was next to none. He also guided us sensitively through Dresden as we marvelled at its rebirth since its destruction in WW2. Frank’s affinity to Germany, his command of the German language and his in-depth knowledge of all things German was an absolute delight to listen to and made this holiday a memorable one in every way.

I would like to send you a very positive feedback from the trip I have just come back from (Aug 18th). Both myself and my partner went on the trip which included Berlin and Dresden. Annette, who was the guide for the entire trip was just wonderful and made everything just fit into place. I really enjoyed the entire time away and would advise any of my friends to go on one of these trips. I cannot wait to go on the next one.
Review by Kevin Saltmarsh on 20 August 2013
We thoroughly enjoyed this trip to Germany, to the area which was formerly in the eastern sector. Our guide Alan was excellent in all respects and took very good care of us all. The hotels were excellent, in fact I would say they were ‘posh’ so we enjoyed our time there and being well looked after by the staff. There was so much to see and do in such a short time but we were also given ‘free time’ to do our own thing. The visit to Colditz Castle will never be forgotten, the guide who showed us around was Johannes, a lovable larger than life character who kept us entertained as well as informed about what happened in the castle during WW2. We will look forward to our next holiday with Riviera Travel and certainly recommend you to our friends.

Review by Katharine Dallas on 23 August 2013
Returned from another great Riviera short break within 10 days and we both thoroughly enjoyed the above tour. Travelling via Easyjet from Southend Airport was easy and hassle free. Our Tour manager, Alan, kept us amused, informed and made the trip a really enjoyable experience always on hand should we need to ask him anything. It was a great mix of people on the tour and we all enjoyed various drinks and meals with one another. The trip itself was very interesting covering various periods of German history right up to the present day and Alan was always ready to suggest other places of interest to see in our free periods. As always with Riviera the hotel accommodation was excellent and more worthy of 5* with facilities, catering and staff all above expectation. This is our 4th trip with Riviera, previously with friends, and we look forward to planning more trips with Riviera next year. Just one other thing to mention, I, for the first time, left a bag on the coach. On mentioning this to Alan he contacted the coach company and on the following morning, with a different driver and coach, the bag was returned to me. Excellent service from Alan and the coach company. Keep these excellent tours going.

This was our first trip with Riviera Holidays but hopefully won’t be our last. From the initial booking of the holiday everything ran smoothly and hassle free. Our tour guide, Annette was knowledgeable and entertaining with a professional manner. The timings and excursions enabled us to make the most of our time in Berlin and Dresden. The excursions to Colditz and Meissen were not rushed but neither was time wasted. We look forward to future holidays with Riviera.

My husband and I would like to thank you for a wonderful tour which we have just had. We took part in the tour to Berlin, Dresden, Meissen and Colditz. The two hotels we stayed in both in Berlin and Dresden were great. The rooms and the whole general outlook was wonderful. The transfers from the airport to the hotel could not have been better. The courier we had on the tour (Annite) was just the best, nothing was too much trouble for her and she had plenty of information to share with us about the two cities. The visit to Colditz was unbelievable and here the guide we had was just so good and had plenty of detail on how the whole place housed so many people and he was easy to listen to. We have travelled with your company before and will certainly do so again and will tell other people about you. Again many thanks for a wonderful trip.

We have just returned from our tour as above and wish to say how much we enjoyed the tour. Our guide Andrew was excellent; very knowledgeable and able to give sound advice to everyone on how to get the best from the tour. Our return flight was cancelled at the very last moment and Andrew was brilliant in coping with this situation and managed to get us re-booked on a Frankfurt flight for our onward journey to Heathrow. His quick action enabled us all to get home. All this despite being under pressure to return to the hotel & take the rest of the group to another airport for their return home. Well done Riviera - good choice of guide.

We have just returned from this most wonderful trip. The hotels were of a high standard and well appointed and each tour had excellent content. We were very happy and impressed with our tour manager Andrew (Andy) Taylor. His vast historical and geographical knowledge was delivered with great enthusiasm and energy which held us captivated with facts and findings at each location. Andrew looked out and looked after us brilliantly and was particularly resourceful, helpful and supportive when we encountered problems at the airport on our return. We would highly recommend both Andrew and Riviera tours in the future. Many thanks.

My sister and I have just returned from the above trip which was led superbly by Janie. We loved it all and were amazed by the efficiency of Easy jet which ran dead on schedule. This tour, including its excellent choice of hotels, Maritim in Berlin and Steigenberger in Dresden, was fabulous. We have travelled with Riviera many times and they never disappoint. The fact that we sampled the local cakes in both cities didn’t add any weight as we walked everywhere soaking up the magnificent sights. Bravo Riviera and Cheers Janie for a most informative tour.

My husband and I have recently returned from this tour which we both thoroughly enjoyed. This was our first holiday with Riviera and we were very impressed with the standard of the accommodation and the tours.
I have been reluctant to book a guided tour holiday before because some of the day tours I have experienced on previous holidays have felt as if they were designed more for the convenience of the tour guide rather than the enjoyment of the participants. Happily this was not our experience with Riviera. What made the holiday special was the helpfulness, expertise and efficiency of our guide, Andy Thomas, who not only ensured we kept to our schedule without making us feel like a herd of cattle, but also combined knowledgeable talks about the places we visited with humour and interesting asides.
We were particularly grateful for the way in which he dealt with the cancellation of our return flight. His willingness to stay with us at the airport until the check-in desk opened meant he was there to re-book flights for our whole party, ensuring we all got home the same day. This was despite the fact that he had to return to Berlin to escort the other half of our group to the airport for a later flight.
Thank you Andy and Riviera for a memorable holiday.

This was our first trip with Riviera. Booking by telephone was excellent with a very professional member of staff to help with some minor queries. Visits to Colditz and the Meissen factory were our particular highlights. The Maritim hotels in Berlin and Dresden were both excellent with outstanding breakfasts! Coach travel was comfortable and there were no delays. Just two tips for any future travellers: 1. Allow extra time at the start of the journey. Check-in at EasyJet and the security gates at Manchester were both extremely busy even on a Sunday, and took well over an hour to clear, leaving little spare time before boarding. 2. In line with other continental hotels, there are no coffee/tea making facilities in the rooms. We are so glad that we took our travel kettle for an early morning brew!
In spite of the weather we really enjoyed this trip. Thank-you Riviera.

My husband & I have just returned from your Berlin & Dresden holiday and thought it was wonderful. It is the 5th time we have travelled with you and we have enjoyed them all. Frank, our courier was brilliant and so knowledgeable.
We would have liked an extra day in Berlin as there was so much to see. Thought the hotels were excellent.

What a fantastic break. When we arrived at Berlin Airport we were met by our excellent guide Frank. A former school teacher who used to teach German language and history. He certainly knew his stuff and we learned so much about the places we were visiting. We also had the added bonus of Richard - a new addition to the Riviera team who was shadowing Frank on this trip before taking a group of his own. IF you get either of these as your guide you will have a great holiday.
The places visited on this tour are very much part of the history of both Germany and the UK as a result of World War 2. Some places have some extremely emotional events associated with them. Not least of these being Dresden. This was handled extremely well during our walking tour of the town - the centre of which is now sympathetically restored. It was excellent to see Colditz and see some of the escape tunnels and see the escape museum. Although I was slightly disappointed that we didn’t see much of the interior.
Berlin is an amazing place and it is very difficult to imagine what that city was like when it was divided by the wall. The route of the wall is clearly marked and I had to smile as I sat in a cafe eating cake and realised that my left foot was in West Berlin and my right foot was in East Berlin.
Excellent hotels and coaches too throughout. I highly recommend this trip. Particularly if you are interested in WW2 or Cold War history.

We have just returned from this informative and exciting tour and as a family found it very interesting. We must thank our Tour Manager, Richard, for his knowledge and professionalism, all delivered with a timely sense of humour when needed. A thoroughly recommendable trip if you are interested in history and culture combined; we would definitely return to Germany following this visit.
Review by The O’Donnell Family on 25 September 2013
This was a super trip, full of history and interesting sights. The Maritim Hotel in Berlin was excellent - in Dresden we could have done without the nightmare lifts! However, overall facilities were good, and food was excellent everywhere. All arrangements went very smoothly in spite of a diversion near Colditz - in fact it turned out to be quite a scenic route! Richard Simms was an excellent tour leader, with a great deal of inside knowledge of a divided Germany. There were some very moving moments, but happily contrasted with Richard’s gentle sense of humour. Highly recommended.

My husband and I had booked to go to India with Riviera Travel. Unfortunately, due to family reasons, we had to cancel. With Riviera Travel we were able to put the deposit towards another holiday and we chose to go to Dresden and Berlin, two cities we had not visited before. We were absolutely delighted with the holiday. Dresden was amazing and so beautiful. The hotel was in a great position for sightseeing. On our way to Berlin the visit to Meissen turned out to be far more interesting than we had expected and the tour round the porcelain factory was fascinating. We then visited Colditz and the famous castle. Well worth the trip. Berlin was amazing and, in the time allowed, we saw a glimpse of its splendors. We are determined to return. Our thanks to Annette, our ever-patient and knowledgeable tour guide who helped make this an unforgettable few days. The standard of accommodation in both cities was excellent.

Many thanks for a good holiday

Recently spent an excellent holiday in Berlin/Dresden. Everything was excellent, hotels were exceptional (although the distance from the Lift to the room in the Berlin Maritim was phenomenal) Our tour guide Andrew was very good, both informative and amusing, this is our third Riviera trip and I have no doubt we will be back.

Just returned from this wonderful tour staying in Berlin and Dresden. Both hotels were superb, all the staff solicitous and very welcoming. We had a great tour guide, Andrew, who was interesting, informative, very helpful and always ‘on hand’ to take care of any queries. I have traveled with Riviera before and they have never let me down, all their tours are well organized and everyone from the office staff to any drivers they employ are kind and helpful. Well done Riviera!

It was our first trip with Riviera and it will certainly not be our last! The quality of hotels is very important to us and we were not disappointed with the standard of accommodation in either Dresden or Berlin; it was excellent. There was a good balance between organised trips and free time. Annette, our tour manager was knowledgeable and was always there if needed. Would recommend Riviera to our friends. Marion and David

I have just returned from this trip to Berlin and Dresden. The trip was fantastic. The tour guide , Mike, was very knowledgeable about both cities and Germany in general. Visits to Meissen and Colditz added to the holiday, with Colditz being personally the highlight. I would liked to have seen more rooms in Colditz itself as the tour was confined mainly to the outside. The guide to Colditz was very informative and made the stories of the POWs come alive. There was also a tour of Dresden which explained in detail the bombing raids on the city and their aftermath. Overall, an excellent trip. If you are interested in WW2 I highly recommend this trip

WOW - what a brilliant trip. Made extra possible by the superb host Annette, who gave us lots of fun, and humour (yes - she was born in Germany too!) - but also just the correct amount of information - but not too much. We had plenty of ‘space’ and personal freedom, but the ‘organised’ part of each day was just perfect - and there were nice people as our fellow travellers on this trip too. A special mention of the fun man in a wheelchair - who Riviera Travel treated ‘normally’ but with care. The 4 star hotels were excellent, as were the spectacular breakfasts - and the luxury coaches that we travelled in. This was our first ‘Riviera Travel’ experience in what our naughty offspring described as ‘Mum and Dad going on an old folks tour.’ But - it won’t be our last with Riviera Travel. SUPERB value for money, competitively priced, but with no ‘short cuts’ in quality. A special ‘shout out’ to our perfect host Annette - light-hearted Germany efficiency and knowledge of each city and visit, but with North American flair (Annette was raised in Canada) BRAVO !

This tour was excellent in every respect. The hotels, the coaches, and all arrangements were superb. Particular mention must be made of the guide Frank Pattison, whose knowledge of the history of the places that we visited, things to see and where to eat was very comprehensive and informative. His escorted tours were particularly well done and enabled us to be more selective in choosing where to go in the free time available. He was also very approachable and helpful if there was any problems and had lots of hints, tips and suggestions which enabled us to make the most of our holiday. Well done Frank & Riviera. Based on this experience I would recommend Riviera to anyone & will certainly consider travelling with them in the future. Robert & Jennifer
Review by ROBERT K. VENNARD on 29 October 2013
We can certainly endorse everything Mr Vennard has said about this wonderful holiday. All the arrangements were first class; the hotels were excellent - as were the scrumptious breakfasts - but what made our trip so enjoyable and memorable for us was our guide Frank. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He was so knowledgable and made German history come alive for us as well as looking after us all and ensuring we arrived everywhere on time. The whole trip went like clockwork - Frank saw to that - so we would not hesitate to book with Riviera again. All in all, a truly first class experience.
Review by Harley and Di Lawer on 30 October 2013
What a superb 2 centre stay in Dresden and Berlin. The organisation from start to finish was excellent. The hotels were large, well run business hotels with good size rooms and very good breakfasts. The hotels were both within easy walking distance of the centres which made the sights, when not on the organised parts of the trip, easily accessible. The days were well ‘paced’ with the organised trips giving an insight into the various places of interest; these could then be pursued at leisure in our own time. What made the holiday a particularly good one for us was the excellent tour manager, Frank. We would support all the comments made by Robert Vennard and for us it was Frank who brought the historical background to life, enabling us to put the many things we saw and read about into their proper context. Fascinating and thought provoking. We have never travelled with Riviera before but we will certainly travel with them again. We hope there is an equivalent Frank Pattison running every trip; he will certainly be difficult to match!

Good Morning Having just returned from our first Riviera Travel excursion to Berlin and Dresden we want to inform you of how delighted we both are with the experience. Ordinarily we travel independently and had some reservations about undertaking an organised city break. We are pleased to confirm we considered our guide Alun to be very well informed and an obvious linguist. We appreciated his well paced delivery of information. This was balanced with insights into his own personality and his reflections on historical events. I am confident an opportunity will occur again when we shall decide to holiday with Riviera Travel. Kind regards Tony and Barbara Cooke

Well done Riviera an excellent city break, both hotels excellent. Saw a lot in a short space of time and had plenty of free time as well. As with all these types of holidays the tour guide makes or breaks it. So a huge thank you to Chris for looking after us so well and what a wealth of knowledge on the history. Chris managed to cater for every ones needs.

I had a brilliant time on this trip. Tour guide - Frank - was excellent and gave us his personal recommendations for restaurants we could try as well as sharing his extensive knowledge and thoughts on the cultural and historic perspectives of these German cities and locations. Particularly enjoyed the hotel in Dresden, located right on the main square. I took a river cruise on the Elbe in Dresden, and visited the Albertinum modern art museum. In Berlin, the Topography of Terror Museum is a very sobering reflection on the past but well worth visiting. We did Dresden first and, as a result, had only one full day in Berlin. Would have been great if flights (to Manchester) could have been arranged for later in the day. But that’s the sign of a good holiday - I wanted more than could be fitted in!

This was our second Riviera trip (Moscow and St Petersberg last Autumn) and we thoroughly enjoyed them both. We can’t praise Frank, our tour manager, enough. His knowledge of Germany is outstanding, and he certainly went above and beyond his duty. We personally prefer smaller hotels as we had a long walk from our room to the lifts, particularly in the Maritim but perhaps this would have been covered in “any special needs” category which we didn’t note. We’re not physically disabled - just mature. Another aspect of this Germany trip we would like to mention is the fact that the holiday was reversed - we did Dresden first and not Berlin. The reason we mention this is we found post war Berlin “dark”, consequently our holiday ended on a sombre note. We’ll certainly book with you again. Alan and Pat Furness

The two hotels were excellent, and WOW!! what breakfasts, anything you could possibly want, even full English!
There’s only one word to describe this holiday,—- SUPERB—- would recommend Riviera to anyone, you’d have to be very picky to have a complaint.

Our first Riviera trip. The arrangements went off without a hitch. The tour manager Frank was excellent in every way. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic for the tour, and was excellent in knowing just what to say and when. Particularly his guiding was highly appropriate as he was not obtrusive or over voluble, despite his considerable knowledge. Well done, and thank you Frank. Dresden was a great place to see, and the Steigenberger Hotel was in a perfect spot on the main square, the Meissen factory was surprisingly interesting. Colditz again, well worth a visit. As an introduction to Berlin, again very well judged. The whole trip was really thought provoking.. Thank you for supplying this tour of such good quality!

Our guide (Alan) was a great facilitator and guide making the experience an extremely positive one. We would have no hesitation in recommending this short break to anyone because there is something for everyone including my interest - Colditz Castle.

A very interesting jam-packed couple of days in both Berlin and Dresden, and we particularly commend our tour Manager/Guide, Richard, who was splendid: always unobtrusively busy to make sure everything ran smoothly and making sure we were well looked after, fully informed and well entertained at every stop.
Review by Robert Allan on 3 June 2014
Our 1st time to Berlin and our 5th trip with Riviera and just as good as good as all the others. The Maritim Hotel in Berlin was an excellent choice - it’s within easy walking distance of many of the famous sites and also close to buses and trains. Our tour guide, Andrew, was a mine of information. The coach outing around the city was excellent - just enough time to see all the main sites so you could decide which to explore in more detail.
I thought Meissen would be a bit dull - but it wasn’t at all. I know a lot more about porcelain now. We had a brilliant local guide for the tour of Colditz Castle
Dresden was full of surprises. Some hideous buildings put up by the East Germans. Some buildings which look 200 years old but have been put up since reunification. Rebuilding is still in progress. Here too, Andrew was a huge help, with his local knowledge.
The Easyjet flight on the way out from Gatwick was delayed by 2 hours, and it rained every day. Nothing to do with Riviera of course, and we were having such a good time it didn’t matter. The thing I like most about the Riviera holidays is that they have got the balance just right between looking after you and letting you do your own thing.

We had a tour guide - Keith Hamnett - who was very knowledgeable, great fun, and put so much into making our trip interesting. He was a mine of information, took us on both walking tours and coach tours, and was never short of a story about where we were etc. we could not have asked for better. A brilliant tour made so by our guide Frank. I have been to Berlin a few times but his enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for his subject taught me a lot. The hotels were excellent and we especially enjoyed champagne for breakfast in Berlin although we preferred the hotel in Dresden. The purpose of our trip was to visit Colditz and the guide there was very good. We would have liked more time there and a little less time at Meissen. This was our 5th trip with Riviera and we have enjoyed all of them. Frank is one of the best guides that we have had.

My wife and I would like to record how much we enjoyed our visit to Germany (8 - 12 June). As ever the tour was well planned and the hotels excellent, where the breakfasts in particular were superb. The 50% reduction on mini bar prices were a bonus.
We are already meditating on the choice of a Riviera holiday for 2015.
After the coach tour of Berlin on the Wednesday morning, we had a full afternoon and and then a full morning + on Thursday free. We feel that the content of the tour could perhaps be improved by cutting the free time, for example, by including a visit to the Charlottenburg Palace or some other venue (probably some exquisite gardens).
No doubt some travellers, realising the amount of free time available before journeying to Tegel Airport at 3.45 pm Thursday, may have pre-planned what they would do. I rather suspect however that the majority would have welcomed one other organised visit. I know you welcome suggestions of this kind and I submit it for your future consideration.

Just got back from this excellent trip. The hotels in both Dresden and Berlin where very good, excellent rooms and amazing breakfasts in both. All of the arranged tours were very good and I agree with a previous comment that I would have preferred to spend more time at Colditz. The hotel prices for drinks in Berlin were rather high but the staff and atmosphere was really good as we were their for the Germany/USA world cup game, we got some free drinks when Germany won. I would like to say a massive thank you to our guide, Janie. Her patience was tested on many occasions but her professionalism shone through, her knowledge and willingness to help was outstanding. So, thank you Janie for giving us the opportunity to get an insight in to Germany/Berlin. We will return in the future on your Berlin tour so we can get a more in-depth look at its history.

This was our first Riviera holiday, but it came well recommended - being in our late 30s/early 40s we were known as the ‘Young couple’!! The hotel in Dresden was very good and you couldn’t find a better central location, right next to the Frauenkirche and various (affordable) restaurants - it even included Tea and Coffee making facilities! The guided tour gave you a good overview of the city and then you had plenty of time to explore on your own in the afternoon. In relation to Colditz, as others have mentioned it is a shame you can’t get to see more of inside the castle - our guide Johannes was quite a character! The Berlin hotel was of a high standard but whilst in a quiet location near the Tiergarten, it was a 10 minute or more (wet!!) walk to the nearest places to eat on the Potsdamer Platz as the hotel was just a bit too expensive for us. The breakfasts at both hotels were very good and had a wide choice - even including champagne! Thanks to our tour guide Janie who didn’t always have an easy task of trying to sort everything out for us all.

Only slight reserve was Colditz did not live up to my expectations. In all a very good trip.

I went on the Berlin, Dresden, Meissen and Colditz trip with my brother; the first holiday we have had together for many years. Now both in our eighties and widowers, we are still mentally alert and keen to explore, but not as mobile as we once were, so as you can imagine there were many things we had to consider and questions that needed answering before a decision was finally made. From the moment I contacted Riviera, the two Rachel’s were a fount of information, patience and kindness and it was their approach that persuaded us that this was the trip for us. Everything was arranged very professionally and efficiently with our mobility problems in mind and our tour manager, Frank, was absolutely first class. His knowledge and expertise were phenomenal and he couldn’t have done more for us, organising a rickshaw cycle to follow the walking tour of Dresden and reserving front seats on the various coaches we took. Frank’s services coupled with the excellent hotel food and accommodation (including a fabulous disabled bathroom) cannot be praised highly enough and I would recommend a holiday with Riviera Travel to anyone, young or old.

A very good tour with a friendly and knowledgeable guide, Cilla. Both hotels were of a high standard. Our 2nd tour with Riviera who proved yet again what an excellent company they are. All staff are so efficient and helpful from the initial booking, queries, to online check-in procedures. The two hotels were very good particularly the one in Dresden which was perfectly situated in the main square. The tour itself was excellent and informative, a good mix of organised and free time. We must pay tribute to our tour manager, Frank, who was first class and so knowledgeable. He took the trouble to take us on an informal walk from each hotel so we could get our bearings etc. He kept us well informed as to when we would be having “breaks”. He had the “knack” of knowing when to talk and when to let us relax. Johanes, our guide at Colditz was also very good.
We were looking forward to this tour and were not disappointed. We will definitely use Riviera again.

Review by Gordon McBride on 22 August 2014
We are discerning independent travellers who enjoy doing our own thing and for us Riviera Travel have the right balance of organised, well informed sightseeing with plenty of time to explore by ourselves. Richard was our guide and in our opinion his knowledge, good humour, friendliness, patience and professionalism were outstanding, chatting and mingling with us right up until our arrival at Gatwick. This natural, easy, unobtrusive way was appreciated - it just wouldn’t have been the same without him! Hotels in Berlin and Dresden were first class and the breakfasts were the best we’ve had and kept us going all day!! Coaches very comfortable and the drivers safe, friendly and helpful - loading and unloading baggage with a smile. These things make a big difference. We would have no hesitation in recommending Riviera Travel.

This is our third trip with Riveria Travel. A thoroughly enjoyable time was had. Our tour guide Richard was fantastic, as he was polite, knowledgeable and had a wonderful sense of humour. We could not fault the accommodation at both hotels and the breakfast was exceptional. The general guided tours are a must for WW2 enthusiast, which we are. Keep hold of Richard, as he is an asset to your company. Yes, we will definitely be booking again for next year. Thank you for making this a memorable holiday.

On my return to Portugal I am now able to write to tell you how very pleased my wife and I were with our visit to Berlin and Dresden in June. Once again I complement your organisation on the excellent attention to detail and providing a tour manager ( Frank) who was quite exceptional with his knowledge of Germany and his consideration for all members of the party which made the tour so very enjoyable. I am very pleased to see that since our last tour with Riviera you have included Portugal in your brochures. With best regards to you and your staff

What a wonderful trip Dresden/Berlin has been. The balance of escorted sightseeing and free time was just right, hotels were superb and Richard our tour manager was great. He was very efficient, thoughtful, knowledgeable and such good fun. Make sure you don’t lose him. This was my first trip with Riviera but will certainly not be my last.

Enjoyed our holiday immensely,First time we had travelled with Riviera and would certainly do so again. We had a delightful Tour Guide - Rosey - who told us in great detail all the places of interest. We were looked after splendidly by her and we felt she was like a Mother Hen and we were her Chicks! The Hotels were splendid and the Breakfast Buffets couldn’t be faulted. The only fly in the ointment was the departure Airport as there was one extremely long queue for Easyjet flights - not separate Check-ins as usual.

We have just returned home from a Riviera tour of Dresden and Berlin and we would like you to know that the Tour was excellent. The Tour was made especially enjoyable by our Tour Guide - Richard - who looked after a very large party - 46 of us - half from Dublin - wonderfully well. Richard is an absolutely ideal Guide; he is extremely conscientious, courteous and caring; his planning and briefing for the entire time we had with him was outstanding and we are sure that he did a great deal more for us than his schedule required; really nothing was too much trouble. He is a great credit to your Company and we are very grateful. Many thanks.

We have just returned from a very enjoyable trip. It was our first time with Riviera and hopefully will not be our last. The accommodation, itinerary and organisation were excellent and we cannot speak too highly of our tour manager Richard. He was a first class guide with so much knowledge at his fingertips. In addition he was humorous, well organised, and so helpful. We would certainly recommend your company to our friends.

Yet another well run tour by Riviera. The Dresden hotel one was in a brilliant central location but both were first rate. Annette the Tour Manager was charming and efficient and the holiday was most enjoyable. It gave us sufficient time on our own to explore
Review by S Ryan on 21 September 2014
We enjoyed the trip very much. Dresden was beautiful with many interesting buildings and good restaurants. Berlin by contrast was much more modern and not as interesting for us. We enjoyed the coach tour of Berlin and afterwards explored more on foot. Restaurants in Berlin seemed to be mainly of the fast food type or a bit too exotic for our taste. Both hotels were excellent and the service was good. Our tour guide, Annette, was excellent giving us lots of interesting facts as we went around .

We have just returned home from this 5 day Tour. It was excellent, and our guide Annette was very helpful and informative, her knowledge added to our enjoyment. Thank you Annette. The organisation and hotels were very good and your backroom staff were very helpful prior to our trip. Thank you folks for checking us in for our boarding passes. It was one less worry. We would certainly go with Riviera again.

We went on your Dresden & Berlin tour from 2nd September until 6th September ad found the experience extremely good with excellent hotels and travel arrangements. The guide Keith was excellent, his knowledge of the area and it’s history was fantastic and he was never boring. We would recommend your company.

My wife and I have just returned from this excellent short tour. We travel a lot but have not previously taken a guided tour. Riviera Travel was recommended by friends and we were not disappointed: we shall certainly recommend the company ourselves. The itinerary was well-planned and everything perfectly organised but in a way which did not make us feel regimented. The Maritim Hotels in Berlin and Dresden were of a very high standard and the coaches were smooth, quiet and comfortable. We would like to pay particular tribute to our guide, Alan Jones, who was largely responsible for the success of the tour. He was not only tireless in looking after us but was unfailingly good humoured and gave us the feeling that he enjoyed his job. His explanations of history were both enjoyable and authoritative with the result that we came home with a new understanding of events in Germany during our lifetime as well as earlier. We are very grateful and look forward to our next tour with Riviera.
Review by Dr Gordon Stark on 19 October 2014
Our first time with the Company and certainly will not be our last. Both hotels excellent and the tour could not be faulted. These tours are only as good as the Tour Manager, and, in this case, Annette was perfection, pleasant company and oh so knowledgeable on the Region and its history. Thanks to all, we will be back

The hotels in both Dresden & Berlin were excellent ,felt really spoilt & looked after, Breakfasts well lets just say that there was a vast choice which would cater for everybody, Excellent. Nothing was of to much trouble for Richard & if he didn’t know something he found out & informed you later. Excellent value for money, cant wait to book another of your excellent trips.

A very interesting tour with a great tour manager Chris, who did superbly well when the coach company let her down, arranging taxis to the airport in Berlin. Hotels were very high quality and well located. Only other comment is that an extra day in Berlin would have been worthwhile and could have been offered as an option. We will use Riviera again having had two excellent holidays with you.

I have just returned from the above holiday together with my traveling companion Mrs Mary Badenoch. It was my first experience with Riviera Travel and her third, and we would both like you to know how very much we enjoyed ourselves.
In particular, we thought that Mr Richard E Simms was a very good guide. He was informative, extremely helpful, relaxed and always looked smart. Both our Maritim hotels were of a high standard and we were most comfortable.
Office administration was helpful and efficient, the content of the tour suited us well and we both certainly hope to use Riviera Travel again.

We have just returned from a most enjoyable visit to Dresden & Berlin, two very different cities but both with interesting histories. The visit was enhanced by our tour manager Richard Simms. He was informative, helpful and had a good local knowledge. The two hotels used were excellent and served magnificent buffet breakfasts. We would have no hesitation in recommending Riviera Travel and this trip in particular to anyone wanting a taster of two great cities.

I usually travel independently but wanted to visit Colditz which is a difficult place to get to by public transport. This trip was ideal as there was ample opportunity for independent travel if you wanted. The whole tour was exceptional value and the hotels excellent. I will certainly recommend Riviera (and have done already) to other people. The Meissen exhibition was so interesting and for me, a highlight of the trip. Our tour leader, Frank Pattison, was very well-informed and not at all intrusive. Just right in fact.

The Tour Manager, Richard Simms was mos professional, informative, helpful and interesting and he made it such a delightful experience. Make sure you hang onto him, he is FIVE STAR!. The hotels were very good, and travel timings most accurate at all stages. This is our first holiday with Riviera, and we would not hesitate to use you again.

Excellent tour, hotels and tour guide (Richard)! I have used Riviera Travel 7 times before this tour so I knew what to expect. Thoroughly enjoyed my 4 days spent here. Richard was especially good with his local knowledge and history of all the places visited. He kept the group entertained with his wit and charm. This tour certainly encouraged me to return to Berlin and Dresden for a longer holiday in future. The tour guides at Colditz and the Meissen porcelain factory were very good too. Where do I go to next year for my 9th Riviera Travel holiday?
Review by James Marshall on 11 May 2015
Just returned from the Berlin. Dresden, Meissen and Colditz tour. Hotels were high quality and perfectly located with the balance of old and new city working so well. The Tour Manager Richard was outstanding in working hard all through the trip to provide endless, thorough and interesting information about the places in the context of the recent war. Endless questions by the group were answered so completely. He provided orientation walks on arrival at each stop to ensure one could gain the most from the holiday. One day turned out to be public holiday and advantage was taken of a traffic empty Berlin to visit much more of the city. I can only highly recommend the holiday and thorough exploration of an area new to me. Well done Richard and Riviera.

Very, very good! 4th time we’ve been with Riviera, so I’m now up to speed with what to expect from them. This tour, and in particular the guide, Mike Cole, delivered in spades! Excellent hotels. Excellent itineraries. Good pace, good timing. Very good balance between organised tours and free time to explore. There is a lot of thought provoking material on this tour about 20th century European history, and I enjoyed it a lot. But there are so many other facets to delve into. If, like me, you are a lover of porcelain, then the Zwinger museum and the Meissen factory are simply not to be missed!

My partner and I have just returned from Germany. The tour was well planned and everything was catered for, from the Airport pick-up to the Hotel. Our tour guide Annette was excellent she spent time explaining everything and made the trip a pleasure. Dresden was a delight, the visit to Meissen and Colditz very informative. Berlin was great, the hotel was ideally situated. This was our first trip using Riviera I can definitely say we shall be using you again.

Another great holiday with Riviera after a brilliant time in Croatia last year. I’m sticking with Riviera! This time our relaxed and knowledgeable guide Mike did a great job steering us, informing us and chatting to us. He set a comfortable tone and was unfailingly efficient and friendly. His personal knowledge of Germany was a bonus. The tour was well designed and paced. One or two of the Berlin stops were a bit rushed perhaps but it was a super tour overall. I found our German guide’s accent a bit hard to unscramble at Colditz but I understood enough to make sense of most of the commentary. Both hotels was very good - in fact the Maritim in Dresden was excellent.

Another excellent, well organised tour - we enjoyed every minute of it! So enjoyed seeing Berlin without the wall and as for Dresden - the old rebuilt (amazing craftsmanship) centre is so compact and walkable. Both our hotels (Maritim and Steinberger) were excellent, will definitely use them again. Special thanks to our Tour Manager Janie for her infinite patience and knowledge, sorry that we didn’t get to say a proper goodbye (technical hitch as the lift at Schoenfeld was not working so Airport Assistance took us straight to the departure gate!). Thank you from two very satisfied travellers Helen Sanders and Irene Morris

My husband and I have just returned from a 5 day trip to Berlin, Dresden, Meissen and Colditz and we wish to express our appreciation of a well organised holiday. We have been on 4/5 previous Riviera holidays all of which were extremely successful mainly due to the very good tour manager on each trip and the most recent was no exception. Jane Watson was excellent and had an extremely pleasant and engaging manner in dealing with every one of the 49 people in her group. Like all our other Riviera tour guides she was very knowledgeable and always willing to go that “extra mile”.
We do not hesitate in recommending your company to everyone we meet and only are surprised when we find people who have not travelled with you before. Keep up the good work and we look forward to our next Riviera break.

Just returned from a brilliant trip. Annette was a delightful and knowledgeable guide. My only slight grumble is that we would have liked an extra day in Dresden - others felt the same. Hotels were wonderful - not used to champagne for breakfast. Position of the Dresden hotel in particular was perfect. This was our third trip with Riviera and there will definitely be more.

Review by M & E Baxter on 29 June 2015
This was an excellent tour, exceeding our expectations. The itinerary was well thought out and the hotels were well sited and very good in both cities. Our initial concerns that we wouldn’t have enough time to explore on our own were soon dispelled and there was just the right balance of induction in each city.
Our tour guide, Frank Patterson, was brilliant at balancing the information provided. He was excellent at giving us well researched background information, including where and when everything would happen, plus practical details of where we could buy lunch and when we would be having comfort breaks. His depth of knowledge on Germany, its history and the cities that we visited was a real bonus to our holiday as well.
We will certainly book with Riviera again and we want to see more of the old “eastern bloc” countries now.
Review by John Myers on 9 July 2015
We both enjoyed this tour which provided us with an insight into these most interesting cities. Our guide Annette was excellent both in the way she lead the tour and in the extent of her knowledge which she imparted in a most “user friendly” manner. The hotels were of a high standard and we were particularly happy with their location being just outside the city centre but near enough to be able to walk in. Our only comment, and this is not a complaint, is that an extra day in Berlin would have been very welcome.

We have returned from our holiday flying from Bristol to Berlin, then to Dresden, Meissen & Colditz and return to Berlin. My wife and I would like to say how extremely pleased we were with the whole event. This holiday was booked by our friends, Mr & Mrs Evans, as a surprise for my 70th birthday - what a surprise, considering that they told me I was going to the Isle of Wight!! We have never used Riviera Travel before, but we were so impressed by the venues, hotels, tours and especially our tour guide Mike - he was SUPERB!!! Please convey our sincere thanks to him for his unfailing friendliness, courtesy, co-operation, local knowledge, German language skills and general efficiency. In view of our very positive experience with Riviera travel, we hope to book further holidays through yourselves and will certainly recommend you to our many “retired friends”. Once again, thank you and especially Mike for a wonderful holiday.

My family and I participated in your Berlin, Dresden, Meissen and Colditz tour over the period 13th July to 17th July 2015. I want to commend your company on all aspects of the provision of this tour. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will not hesitate in booking another escorted tour with Riviera Travel in the future. Everything, from the initial booking via telephone in March 2015, through to the completion of the tour, ran without hitch and we were most impressed by your company’s professionalism.
I would like to make particular mention of our tour guide, Mr Richard Simms. He was excellent and I cannot commend him enough. One example, which I would like to bring to your attention, is at lunch in the Sony Centre, Potsdamer Platz on our last day, I asked my 14 year-old son Joshua if he had enjoyed the trip and would he go on another. In confirming he had, and he would, he asked if we could have Richard as the tour guide again!
Many thanks again. I have no doubt we will tour with Riviera Travel in the future.

As well as being efficient and helpful, he was extremely knowledgeable and had lots of stories which were entertaining. The whole trip was very well organised and the Hotels were of a high standard. My friend and I have recently returned from your excellent tour of Dresden, Meissen, Colditz and Berlin. As we started in Dresden we were a little worried that there would not be enough time in Berlin, however we really loved Dresden and were so pleased we had the extra time there. especially as the weather was extremely hot and staying at the very central first class Steigenberger Hotel proved a real bonus. Meissen was fascinating, Colditz so interesting and our time in Berlin, although brief, gave us a great flavour of a city that I think needs several visits to do it justice. Being the 25th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall made it even more interesting.
Our tour guide Andrew Thomas was excellent. His knowledge of the history of East Germany/ re-united Germany and his genuine enthusiasm for his subject made our stay as enjoyable as it could possibly be. Well done.
My first trip with Riviera but most definitely not my last.

Thank you for a lovely and really interesting tour. We thoroughly enjoyed it and came back with a great deal of information. The tour guide, Janie, was very helpful and went out of her way to show us interesting things. We would have preferred the trip to be the other way round, so that we had more time in Berlin, which was quite rushed, trying to see everything in one day. We had a day and a half in Dresden, which although interesting, we felt that we could have used the extra time in Berlin, where there was much more to see. Overall, a super trip with excellent hotels and travel.

We have just returned from our excellent break on this tour. What an excellent experience it was! Of course it is only possible to skim the surface of great destinations like Berlin and Dresden in a short break but we were able to pack a great deal into the time available. We thought the balance between guided tours and free time was very carefully thought out and it allowed us to pursue the interests we had in the free time without being constricted by a fixed schedule. The hotels we stayed in (Maritim in both centres) were excellent and very centrally located - great breakfasts - and the trips to Colditz and Meissen were excellent. The key to our enjoyment of Berlin and Dresden were the invaluable pointers given by our guide Frank. Such a knowledgeable gentleman and such attention to the detail of both the history and the organisation of the trip. In our opinion he went well beyond our expectations and helped make our trip truly memorable. We shall definitely make further trips with Riviera.

My husband and I have just returned from this tour to Berlin, Dresden, Meissen and Colditz and I just felt I’d like to share with anyone who might be pondering on where to travel to, to consider seriously taking this trip. After a very smooth flight we were met by Frank, our tour guide, who explained en route to our hotel how we would be involved in our four day holiday. We learned on day two how in the 14th century Berlin was originally two separate towns and bringing the history to the present, were given time to visit Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and find out all about the Berlin wall (breached in 1989). Having never been to Berlin before, these were places I’d read about in both history books and “spy novels” - having an over-active imagination, it wasn’t difficult to delve into thoughts of espionage etc. However actually being there burst my imaginary bubble and brought me firmly down to earth, realising just exactly what went on, in the real world. Our Guide Frank, described in detail, just how things have evolved over the years, extremely interesting, he “brought to life the whole scenario. Our tour continued with a visit to Colditz where we learned of the prisoners and their escapes, on to a visit to Meissen and the fabulous creations there. Day 4 saw us travelling to Dresden - a beautiful city on the majestic River Elbe. We learned of the ruler of Poland and Saxony - Augustus 2nd - a gentleman with a glib tongue and a twinkle in his eye but whose great love of beautiful things, be they paintings, or buildings certainly ensured his posterity. A guided walking tour of Dresden with Frank took us through the amazing Frauenkirche, whose bell-shaped dome dominated the skyline, viewing the works by Rubens, Canaletto, and a many others left us in a state of amazement. I hope I can be forgiven for my enthusiasm, but it was truly a wonderful holiday, and the sun shone on us which was just perfect. Definitely to be recommended, and a little footnote to Riviera - don’t lose your tour guide (Frank) his knowledge, expertise and helpful approach was just what the holiday needed.

Riviera are lucky to have him. The two hotels were outstanding, and the breakfasts amazing. We enjoyed Colditz Castle and our guide (Alex) commentary was excellent. Just returned from this round trip. Dresden first. Superbly managed by Frank Pattison our tour manager. Cannot fault the whole 4 night trip, it was packed with very interesting info throughout. Thanks to Frank a well spoken, knowledgeable person that Riviera could not afford to lose. 2nd trip with Riviera 10/10 all round.

We met many like-minded friends on this superb tour led by Frank, one couple were on their tenth Riviera holiday - and I can see why.
We visited some very beautiful and interesting places at a perfect pace neither rushed nor too slow; Frank was such a helpful, considerate, knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide and his breadth of understanding of Germany and its history and the ability to share it in an interesting accessible way was masterful.
There was plenty of space in the itinerary for exploring Schloss, galleries and museums in our own time, as well as kuchen and German cooking. The diet has started.
Now, where shall we go next?

Have just returned from a really enjoyable trip to Dresden and Berlin. It was our first Riviera trip but will not be our last. It was made all the better by our excellent tour manager Keith whose knowledge and humour throughout the trip (including the 12 hour delay at the airport- plane cancelled) added so much to our understanding of the area. The trip to Colditz was made more memorable by the excellent local guide Johannesburg.

My husband and I have just returned from 4 days visiting Dresden and Berlin (8 - 12 Sept.) and I wanted to tell you how enjoyable and successful the holiday was. It was our third holiday with Riviera and once again the organisation was incredible and everything went like clockwork Our tour guide Andrew Thomas was excellent giving us just the right amount of information, often with humour, and always had the answer to any extra questions. The coaches were comfortable, as were the hotels. We know we can trust Riviera and we will be back!

My wife and I have just returned from the Dresden / Berlin tour on 16th September which was excellent. The tour guides at both Colditz and Meissen were very knowledgeable in their area of expertise. Special praise though for our Tour manager, Frank who was so interesting and his knowledge of the history covering the pre and post war Berlin was excellent and brought alive memories of events in our lifetime. Nothing was too much trouble, Frank would go out of his way to help. Hotels were very good as was the balance between free time and tours. This was our third time with Riviera, now looking forward to the fourth in 2016 !

Very enjoyable trip to Dresden, Meissen, Colditz and Berlin. Good hotels (especially in Dresden) and all arrangements very organised. Particular highlight was the knowledge and passion shown by Andrew Thomas who really knows his stuff and linked everything together brilliantly.

We have recently returned from this tour. Dresden was excellent and the hotel perfectly situated. Meissen was very interesting and we had an excellent tour of the factory. Colditz was ok but we would have rather had a little more time in the town. Berlin had much to see and was very interesting. The only thing I would say is that more time is needed there as it needs more than a day and a bit to see everything, although the coach tour was excellent and our driver was first class. Our guide Alan was knowledgeable, informative and humorous.

Hello Riviera, just returned yesterday 25th (flight times were great). One of the best trips ever. The hotels very very good and so central both in Dresden & Berlin. Andy Thomas our guide has researched all our tours and was excellent, also recommended eating places, museums, and must see places). Both visits we were on TV, Colditz and Maritim hotel in Berlin; (celebs all of us now). This was our first trip with you and certainly will book again and ask for the tours with Andy as our guide. Thank you for a great time. Kindest regards

An amazing tour, made exceptional by the knowledge of Andy our Tour Manager. His years of experience in teaching and knowledge of Germany from the earliest to the complicated West/ East divide after the second world war was enlightening even for someone who remembers those times well. I will not forget his words ‘if my lips are moving and you can’t hear what I’m saying, get closer’ . I would certainly recommend this tour and hope to go on another next year.

My husband & I came home yesterday from the above tour, we had a great time & everything went to plan. The hotels were excellent (too much good food), bus drivers, guides etc all nice & helpful. Andrew who was with us for the trip is one of the best we have had, so interesting to listen to & nothing was too much trouble for him. We have travelled with you before & hopefully will do so again, keep up the good work.

Had a great time, Andrew was very knowlegable regarding the areas visited. It was hard going on the feet but well worth it. It was a lot to fit into 5 days but again it was ok. The hotels were lovely 1st class. I would say the maritim in Dreisden was the best of the two. Would ready recommend this tour to anyone.

My wife Anita and I have just returned from a 5-day trip to Germany, booked with Riviera Travel (our first experience of your company). We had a wonderful time, seeing so many interesting sights in Dresden, where we spent the first 2 nights, at the Meissen factory and Colditz castle, and in Berlin where we spent the 3rd and 4th nights. Much of the success of the trip was attributable to our tour guide, Andy Thomas, who provided an almost continuous commentary on the sights, interspersed with historical information and anecdotes. He had a remarkably detailed knowledge and imparted the information with light heartedness and gentle humour. I think it is safe to say that everyone in our party thoroughly enjoyed his informative and friendly manner. We will certainly consider Riviera for potential future trips. With many thanks and kind regards,

We would highly recommend this tour.
Berlin was interesting for its history, most notably the recent history surrounding the Cold War and the reunification. We stayed in the Maritime which was well situated about 15 minutes from Potzdammer Platz and its wide selection of good restaurants. We would recommend the orientation tours that Richard gave on the first night in Berlin & Dresden to get a feel for where to eat.
The Berlin city tour was very informative and interesting - if you are feeling a little tired by the afternoon, one of the short river cruises is well worth considering.
On day 3 both Colditz and Meissen were well worth visiting and the local guides knowledgeable and in the case of Colditz very entertaining.
Our favourite was Dresden - lots of interesting architecture (albeit reproduction due to war damage). The morning walking tour was both informative and very entertaining. Once again there were many good restaurants within a short walk of the hotel.
In both Berlin and Dresden we stayed in Maritim hotels. These were of a very high standard with excellent facilities. Others have noted the breakfasts in their reviews and they were certainly highly commendable for selection, quality (& quantity) and set one up for the day. Alas both hotels had very basic air conditioning and we found the room a little stuffy - however the windows opened and the noise level was OK.
We have been on several Riviera trips previously and have always found them good value and the tour managers to be both knowledgeable and helpful. On this occasion Richard set a new standard and added a great deal to the pleasure that we enjoyed from this trip. Richard was very knowledgeable but also had great wit and kept us entertained throughout. We were particularly impressed by Richard’s Dresden tour which was knowledgable, entertaining but also very thought provoking. Well done Richard!
What could have been better? It’s very difficult given the time available to give other than a taster or an overview of each of the locations. Perhaps an extra day in Berlin? For good reason the tour concentrated around the centre / eastern section of the city where there is lots to see. It would have been good to have got more of an overview of the former West Berlin which we only really saw on the coach ride to Colditz.
In summary, well done once again Riviera for an excellent good value package. Thank you to Richard for making the trip so entertaining.

An fantastic tour of Berlin & Dresden. The Hotels and transport were good. This tour was made exceptional by the knowledge of Andy Thomas our Tour Manager. He related the history of the two cities articulately and his facts about pre-war Geramany and up to the time when the Berlin Wall came down were exceptional. The guides we had at Colditz and Meissen were very informative and told with humour. I shall definitely recommend this tour to other people.

I have just returned from a most enjoyable visit to Berlin and Dresden with your company. It was a great trip and our courier/guide, Alan Jones, was terrific - nothing was to much trouble for him. Please pass on my thanks to him.

Hi. Just wanted to compliment you as a company and Richard Sims our tour guide for an exceptional 5 day holiday. The weather being superb was perhaps out of your control but the hotels, guide in particular and the organisation were superb. Despite the remains of the Berlin marathon cordoned off some areas in The city and several tourist hot spots in Dresden being closed for events/filming we thoroughly enjoyed our time at the venues, Meissen and Colditz top the list. Our guide Richard went the extra mile and handled everything in his path without fuss and kept us amused and informed . Well done we will certainly try out other holidays with you in the coming 12 months.

We are just back from this trip and really enjoyed it, despite the weather! We enjoyed the comfortable and centrally located hotels, all arrangements went like clockwork, and our tour manager Keith Hamnett was knowledgeable and helpful ~ taking us on trips ‘off schedule’ to point out places to eat. The bus tour and walking tour were very good. Like previous Riviera trips we have been on, the balance between being organised and free time is spot on. We would have liked an extra day in Berlin but that is the only quibble. A very interesting trip.

My husband and I have just returned from this tour and apart from the weather had a great time. We would like to thank Keith for sharing so much information with us. His knowledge of both Berlin and Dresden was excellent. We would also like to thank Riviera for very kindly upgrading our room and providing champagne and fruit for our golden wedding. Much appreciated.

My wife, our two friends and I returned yesterday from the 4 nights/5 days tour of Dresden and Berlin, plus Meissen and Colditz. We wanted to confirm how much we all enjoyed the tour, which was well put together, not too much coach travel, and with excellent accommodation included. The tour was just the right mix, with Dresden and Berlin such different cities, and with such a great variety of things to see. In particular, we were very impressed with Alan Jones, our tour guide: he was a perfect guide, knowledgeable and with a good sense of humour, and always sensitive to the needs of his customers. An excellent guide!

Just back and wanted to say that our second trip with Riviera lived up to our high expectations, hotels in Meissen and Berlin both of a very high standard ( very comfortable, great breakfasts in both and well located ). Alan jones was excellent as our tour guide and he was competent, amusing and kept the tour times right on track throughout the entire trip and so our thanks go to him. We have already booked our next trip with Riviera to China so slightly further afield and hope that the trip is as good as the last two!

This was our first trip with Riviera and the whole experience was very enjoyable. One of the best aspects of the tour was our knowledgeable, friendly and helpful guide Rosie. From the moment we got on the coach at Berlin Airport, she provided information that helped us get the most out of our visit to that city. When we travelled onwards to Dresden, taking a whole day including visits to Colditz and Meissen, she provided us with fascinating stories of the area, it’s history and personalities. She always had a lively sense of humour too. We fully intend to travel with Riviera again.

Just returned from this trip - Mike, our guide, was exceptionally well-informed, patient and respectful, as well as being good fun and amusing. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour - excellent hotels and a well-planned itinerary even to the point of arriving at two minutes to midday to hear the Meissen bells chime in the Zwinger Tower in Dresden.

Visit to Berlin, Colditz, Meissen and Dresden 20 Oct to 24 Oct 2015 Our guide Frank was excellent and his knowledge of Germany, both historically and current was explained to us so well as we travelled around on our tour. The organisation went like clockwork and the hotels were superb, I would have no hesitation to recommend this trip to anyone. Dennis & Rosemary Smith
