Overview

Travel to the heart of Europe and you'll find a trio of romantic countries connected by the winding waters of the tenacious Danube river. No longer the 'forgotten corner of Europe', Austria, Hungary and Slovakia offer a warm welcome, keen to show off the spoils of their eclectic ruling histories and cultural influences. This is especially true of the Austrian capital, Vienna, which sits resplendent as the former seat of the Habsburg monarchy, the wealthy and hugely influential royal house that dominated central Europe from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The Vienna we see today is a limelight-stealing city draped in opulence. Its pristine streets are lined with exquisite examples of ornamental architecture, with the Schönbrunn Palace triumphing as the ultimate Baroque beauty. Heralded the ‘capital of classical music’, Vienna once attracted the world’s greatest composers, including Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss, whose timeless chefs-d'oeuvre still resonate through the fine concert halls of the city.

Just over the Slovakian border we come to Bratislava, a city that thrived through the Habsburg era as the royal capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, then struggled under Communist rule in the 20th century before emerging as the capital of a newly independent Slovakia in 1993. The result is an evocative mix of charming old town, delicate Baroque palaces and austere socialist landmarks of steel and concrete, all overlooked by a medieval hilltop castle.

The third capital city on our tour, Budapest, has had a similarly tumultuous past, only officially created in 1873 with the merging of Buda, Pest and Obuda. Its historic roots, however, stretch back through the Habsburg era and the 16th-century Ottoman invasion to Roman rule at the beginning of the first century. The Danube provides the unofficial border between hilly Buda with its atmospheric castle district, and Pest, which boasts a long list of significant highlights topped by the immense riverside Parliament Building, the country’s most iconic landmark.

Of course, there's much more to Hungary than Budapest – we'll enjoy a taste of local life at the under-the-radar town of Győr, take a trip to this land-locked country's 'seaside' at beautiful Lake Balaton, and visit an equestrian ranch on the rural 'Puszta' plains. With tours of Hungary's Gödöllő Palace, Vienna’s world-famous Schönbrunn Palace and the hilltop ruins of Slovakia's Devin castle, our all-embracing itinerary through enthralling central Europe is complete.
