At just two hours away by Eurostar, France is an easy choice of destination for a short break – after all, less time spent travelling means more time to discover the delights of this magnifique country, just across the Channel.
Let’s begin in Paris, Europe’s romantic heart. It comes top of the list for short breaks to France as a capital overflowing with culture, sophisticated style and that certain ‘ooh la la’ that is inimitable worldwide.
From the proud Arc de Triomphe to the iconic Eiffel Tower, the Parisian landmarks have endless grace and beauty. Maybe you’ll see the sights from the River Seine – the Notre Dame Cathedral looks spectacular from the water - or take an evening tour of this city of light, when the landmarks are illuminated to magical effect.
Art lovers can admire the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, the world’s biggest museum, or mingle amongst the artists in the vibrant Montmartre quarter, where the homes of Van Gogh and Renoir, the magnificent Sacre Coeur
Basilica and the risqué Moulin Rouge cabaret await. Shoppers will love to stroll the Champs Elysees, splash out in the gleaming designer boutiques or browse the city’s hidden markets and antique stores.
Of course, short breaks to France don’t end with Paris. The unspoilt Normandy region is easily accessible by coach from the Eurostar and offers a perfect blend of history, art and the charm of rural France. Medieval town Rouen is one of the most atmospheric, with its carefully preserved Old Town and Cathedral so divine that it’s been immortalised by one of the great impressionist painters of the region, Claude Monet.
If history interests you, Normandy presents unique opportunities to delve into times’ past, with Gold Beach, the site of the D-Day landings in 1944, and the remains of another important WWII site, Mulberry Harbour, in Arromanches. You can rewind time even further in quaint Bayeux, where the famous tapestry depicting the invasion of Britain in 1066 can be viewed in all its delicately embroidered glory.
Elsewhere in the region, the picturesque port town of Honfleur makes a pleasant stop, with its row of 18th century, pastel coloured houses lining the waterfront.
Enjoy the fresh catch of the day while watching the bobbing mix of traditional fishing boats and gleaming yachts in the old harbour. In Fecamp, a Benedictine Palace shares its secrets and treasures, although many would agree that its true treasure is the ‘magical’ liquor still brewed in its distillery to a herbal recipe developed by monks!
Whatever you choose to do during your short break to France, you’ll be surrounded by fine food and drink, so choosing a bed and breakfast short break will allow you to take full advantage of the tempting gourmet treats on offer, from the freshest baguettes and tastiest steak frites to fanciful pastries and that obligatory glass of vin rouge.
Whether it’s a chic city break in gay Paris, or a journey back in time in rural Normandy that appeals, short breaks to France are just a couple of hours away.
