The Dalmatian coastline is legendary. Steep limestone cliffs plunge into sapphire-blue waters and the mirror-like Adriatic is studded with countless islands. The hillsides are clad in a green carpet of lush pine forests, lending that instantly recognisable Mediterranean aroma to the air. Roman palaces, amphitheatres, Baroque churches and historic mosques reveal 2,000 years of rule by some of the greatest powers of their time – Dubrovnik, in particular, is a delight. We have included three walking days, so you can fully experience the natural beauty of this unique region.

Biokovo Nature Park, Makarska

Our first full day in Croatia includes a choice of two wonderful walks. Both pass along sections of Napoleon’s Road, which dates back to a period of French domination in the 19th century.

Easy walk
Duration: 2 hours (2.2 miles)
Altitude gain: 616 feet
Terrain: paved road, gravel and rocky tracks

We begin our walk in the area of Ivandica Staje and follow a mountain road that gently ascends the stunning mountains of Biokovo Nature Park. The many paths wind through olive groves, vineyards and pine forests up to the Nevestina Stina viewpoint, where we are rewarded with spectacular views across the mountains to the coastline. Our walk follows a section of Napoleon’s Road to the mountain hamlet of Gornji Kričak and a tiny 19th-century chapel.

The morning concludes with a drive to the seaside town of Donja Brela, where there is time for lunch and perhaps a stroll along the glorious, pine-lined beach.

Moderate walk
3 hours (4.1 miles
Altitude gain: 1124 feet
Terrain: paved road, gravel and rocky tracks

If you wish to take the moderate route, we begin in the mountain hamlet of Gornja Brela. From here we take a picturesque trail, ascending slowly through the orchards, lush pine forests and towering limestone peaks of Biokovo Nature Park.

We discover the pretty chapel of St Nikola before crossing a small valley to the Nevestina Stina viewpoint for more superb vistas. Our descent once again follows a section of Napoleon’s Road to Gornji Kričak. From here we transfer to Donja Brela, where there’s more free time before the return journey to Omiš.
