An archipelago of no less than 443 named islands, it’s perhaps no surprise that Denmark gained a wide reputation as a powerful seafaring nation as early as the 10th century when it first emerged as a unified kingdom. Even before then, Danish Vikings were colonising, raiding and trading right across Europe – including England of course, where Sweyn Forkbeard imposed Danelaw in 1013 as its first Danish king. Denmark today is a prosperous, progressive land with high social mobility and an even higher standard of living. In fact it’s regularly ranked as the happiest country in the world.
